The Pyromaniac’s Victory Lap
Like a toddler playing with a box of matches in a dynamite factory, President Trump has finally managed to blow the roof off the Middle East. And true to form, he’s standing amidst the smoke and rubble of Tehran, beating his chest and waiting for applause.
The assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during "Operation Epic Fury" this weekend is being hailed by the MAGA chorus as a masterstroke, a definitive end to the Iranian menace. But let’s be clear about what actually happened. The United States, in a spasm of unilateral recklessness, just decapitated a sovereign government without a single cohesive plan for what happens the morning after.
We have botched a historic opportunity. For months, the brave people of Iran were already in the streets, bleeding for their own freedom. They were doing the hard, dangerous work of dismantling the regime from the inside. But instead of supporting that organic change, instead of building the kind of diplomatic and economic pressure coalition that George Marshall or Leon Panetta would have recognized as "strategy"President Trump decided he needed better ratings.
He chose to turn a people’s revolution into an American war.
From a strategic standpoint, this is malpractice. We have traded the slow, steady strangulation of a hostile regime for an immediate, chaotic conflagration. Our bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar are now taking fire. Dubai’s airport is burning. The "Orange Menace" has effectively painted a target on the back of every American service member in the region, all so he could claim a trophy kill on Truth Social.
And let’s look at the law, something this administration treats as a mere suggestion. The targeted assassination of a head of state is a direct violation of Executive Order 12333, a ban put in place to prevent exactly this kind of descent into state-sponsored gangsterism. Furthermore, this unilateral strike violates Article 2, Section 4 of the UN Charter. When the United States decides it is above the law, we lose the moral authority to demand that nations like Russia or China follow it. We are cheating at poker and then flipping the table when the other players pull guns.
You cannot bomb a nation into democracy, and you certainly can’t assassinate your way to stability. By killing Khamenei, Trump hasn’t killed the ideology; he has martyred it. He has given the hardliners exactly what they needed: a foreign devil to rally against, obscuring the internal rot of their own governance.
The brave men and women of the U.S. military are now the ones who will have to pay the butcher’s bill for the President’s ego. While Trump takes his victory lap, our soldiers are huddling in bunkers in the Gulf, waiting for the next barrage.
Mr. President, you didn't "win" anything. You just kicked a hornet's nest and handed the flyswatter to an 18-year-old Marine. God help us all.
