A Great Renewal

A Contract with (All of) America

America stands at a crossroads. Economic uncertainty, climate change, and growing inequality threaten the stability of our communities. Yet, history has shown us that when we invest in people, when we harness our collective will for the common good, we can overcome even the most daunting challenges. Now is the time for bold action, a new social contract that rebuilds our economy, protects workers, and secures our future.

The backbone of a strong nation is its infrastructure, yet much of ours is crumbling. We must launch large-scale infrastructure projects to modernize roads, bridges, and public transit while expanding access to broadband and clean water. By doing so, we create millions of jobs and lay the foundation for sustained economic growth.

At the same time, we must address the growing threat of climate change. A national conservation workforce could restore forests, protect wetlands, and improve sustainable farming practices. These projects not only provide employment but also safeguard the environment for future generations.

Too many Americans live one crisis away from financial ruin. A just economy provides stability, not constant uncertainty. We must ensure cash assistance and job training programs for those struggling, reinforcing the safety net for older Americans and workers displaced by economic shifts. We must also prevent mass foreclosures by offering low-interest loans to homeowners and farmers, protecting both individuals and the agricultural backbone of our nation.

The 2008 financial crisis taught us what happens when financial institutions operate unchecked. We must establish rigorous oversight of Wall Street, banning predatory trading practices and requiring transparency in financial dealings. At the same time, we must guarantee savings in banks to prevent panic and bank runs, ensuring that Americans' hard-earned money remains secure.

Modernizing the electrical grid is essential for economic progress, and expanding renewable energy sources will provide long-term solutions to our energy crisis. By constructing alternative energy plants, solar, wind, and geothermal, we can lower costs and reduce dependence on fossil fuels while creating stable, high-paying jobs.

We must also uphold the rights of workers. Labor unions have long been a force for fair wages and safe conditions, yet they face constant attacks. Businesses should be required to negotiate fairly with workers, ensuring that wages reflect the true cost of living. We should also establish a national minimum wage at a livable level and limit the workweek to prevent worker exploitation.

Economic security isn’t just about jobs, it’s about quality of life. To address urban poverty and homelessness, we need a massive investment in affordable housing. Safe, stable housing should be a right, not a privilege.

At the same time, we must recognize that art, culture, and storytelling are the soul of a nation. By supporting creative professionals, commissioning murals, plays, books, and musical performances, we not only uplift communities but also document and celebrate the American experience.

None of these proposals are radical; they are rooted in the best traditions of American pragmatism and ambition. When we invest in our people, our infrastructure, and our shared future, we thrive. This is not just an economic plan, it is a moral imperative.

The time for half-measures and political gridlock is over. America must act boldly, as we have in the past, to build a nation that works for all, not just a privileged few. The future is ours to shape, let’s get to work.

The Steps:

1. Employ people for projects focused on environmental conservation.

2. Fund large-scale infrastructure projects to create jobs and modernize the nation.

3. Provide cash assistance and job programs to those struggling.

4. Regulate banking practices to prevent abuse, corporate corruption, and continue to federally guarantee savings.

5. Establish oversight of Wall Street, banning unfair trading practices and requiring transparency.

6. Fund the modernization of the electrical grid and the construction of alternative/renewable energy plants to generate affordable electricity.

7. Protect labor unions and require businesses to negotiate fairly with workers.

8. Reinforce our safety net for older Americans and those who lost jobs.

9. Provide low-interest loans to prevent foreclosures on homes and farms

10. Regulate what farmers have in production, reducing surpluses and dependence on foreign food sources.

11. Develop affordable housing to address urban poverty and homelessness.

12. Support creative professionals by commissioning murals, plays, books, and musical performances.

13. Set a minimum wages at a living wage, limit the workweek.

14. Give immediate, short-term employment to jobless workers in emergency situations.
